Net Metering

Also see Distributed Generation.

What Is Net Metering?

Effective April 1, 2008, eligible residential and non-residential electric customers of the Ameren Illinois Utilities are able to make application for authorization to net any electricity they generate using renewable resources against the electricity supplied to them by their Ameren Illinois Utility or their alternate retail electric supplier.

See the Net Metering Rule (83IL Admin Code, Part 465) for details.

Who Qualifies?

Residential and non-residential customers who own or operate a renewable fuel-powered generator of 2,000 kW capacity or less, located on the customers’ premises and is used to offset some or all of their electric usage. Eligible renewable fuels are solar, wind, dedicated crops grown for electricity production, anaerobic digestion of livestock or food processing waste, fuel cells or microturbines powered by renewable fuels and hydroelectricity.

What Compensation Do Customers using Renewable Fuels to Generate Electricity Receive?

The Net Metering Rule requires utilities and alternate retail electric suppliers to provide financial credits for renewable fuel-generated electricity that offset the amounts that otherwise would have been supplied by customer’s electricity provider during a billing period. For customers with generators less than 40 kW, credits in excess of their monthly usage will be carried over to future billing periods.

See section 465.50 of the Net Metering Rule (83IL Admin Code, Part 465) for specific rules regarding customer compensation.

What Are the Charges or Fees Associated with the Program?

For residential customers with generators of 40 kW capacity or less that require no physical alterations to connect to the Ameren Illinois Utility system, there are no upfront charges for metering or connection. Monthly tariff charges do apply to all net electric usage in excess of the amount of electricity generated. An applicant may be required to pay an interconnection application fee.

All non-residential customers and residential customers with generators having capacity greater than 40 kW pay the normal charges associated with installing the extraordinary equipment needed to provide dual channel metering.
