Distributed Generation

Also see Net Metering.

What Are the Distributed Generation Requirements?

Effective April 1, 2008, by Administrative Rule the Illinois Commerce Commission established standardized applications, review processes, and agreements for customers wanting to connect generators of 10,000 kVa or less to a utility’s electric distribution system.

Who Qualifies?

Generally speaking, customers whose generators and interconnection equipment are certified by nationally-recognized testing laboratories as meeting certain standards of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Underwriters’ Laboratory, and the National Electric Code. Also, facilities not requiring any new construction by the Ameren Illinois Utilities to protect the reliability of the electric distribution network generally fall under the expedited review provisions.

What Are the Charges or Fees Associated with the Program?

An application fee may be charged. Small facilities that qualify for Net Metering (40KW or less) will not be charged any costs for connecting the generator to the electric distribution system. For larger facilities, applicants may be required to pay for connection cost to the distribution system.
