Gary L. Rainwater is chairman, chief executive officer and president of Ameren Corporation—a position he assumed Jan. 1, 2004, after serving as president and chief operating officer of Ameren Corporation since September 2001.
Mr. Rainwater joined Union Electric Company—now the Ameren utility company, AmerenUE—in 1979. He began his career as an engineer in Electric Transmission and Distribution, where he served for three years before joining Corporate Planning. In Corporate Planning, he held a series of increasingly responsible positions and was elected vice president in 1993. In that position, Mr. Rainwater headed the company’s strategic planning efforts and managed the power generation planning, transmission planning, wholesale power marketing and rate design functions. He also assumed added responsibility for the Transmission Planning and Energy Services departments.
In 1997 Mr. Rainwater was elected executive vice president of the Springfield, Illinois-based AmerenCIPS. In late 1997, he became president and CEO of AmerenCIPS, and in May 2000, he assumed additional responsibility for Ameren’s non-regulated generating subsidiary.
Mr. Rainwater earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a master of systems management degree from the University of Southern California. In 2000, Mr. Rainwater received the prestigious Missouri Honor Award for Distinguished Service in Engineering from the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Engineering. In 2003, he received the University of Missouri-Columbia Alumni Association Alumni Award.
He serves on the dean’s advisory council for the University of Missouri School of Engineering. Mr. Rainwater is a member of the boards of the Edison Electric Institute, the Association of Edison Illuminating Companies, the St. Louis Regional Commerce and Growth Association, Civic Progress, the Missouri Historical Society, the St. Louis USO, the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, and US Bank.
